According to Ring Magazine, Abner Mares (25-0-1), ESPN and other media outlets, WBC junior featherweight champion Abner Mares will move up to featherweight. Along with Mares moving up to featherweight he will vacate his WBC title that he won against Eric Moral back on April 24, 2012 and defend once against Anselmo Moreno. Mares told media as well as on his Facebook page regarding his move up "There needs to be a reason to stay at (122 pounds). I don't make easily. So I have the chance to move up to 126. I have accomplished a lot already, so I said let's give it a try and conquer another weight class." (According to Mares, Ring Magazine, ESPN and other media outlets)
Mares wanted to fight Donaire but unfortunately, that fight cannot be made since Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions have a cold war with each other. A fight against Donaire will make us boxing fans, media and etc happy. As of right now, it cannot not be made. Hopefully, these two fighters (Donaire and Mares) will fight in the middle of this year or in the end of the year. Also, I hope Top Rank and Golden Boy can put there differences aside and just co-promote and make the Mares-Donaire fight. I sure want to see them fight one another.
So Mares moving up to featherweight he can belt holders face Chris John, Daniel Ponce De Leon, Billy Dib and etc. For Chris John, Mares can fight him but John will not want to fight in America, so Mares will have to go to John's backyard in Indonesia to fight him. With Ponce De Leon that fight can be made since both Ponce De Leon and Mares are both promoted by Golden Boy. Finally for Billy Dib, that fight can be made since Dib is with SMS Promotions (50 cent's promotion). If Mares wants to fight Mikey Garcia, I do not think that fight will be made since Garcia is promoted by TR. Mares will have tough challenges ahead in the featherweight division.
