Adrien Broner Stripped of 135lb WBC Belt - Eyes Maidana Rematch

By Shawn Craddick

Adrien Broner was still the WBC 135lb belt holder when he went up two weight classes and defeated Paulie Malignaggi, but then lost a decision to Marcos Maidana. You only have a certain time frame to defend your belt. The organizations cannot wait forever on your decision also because there are other fighters wanting a title shot. So either you defend it or become stripped of it.

All that ended when Adrien Broner signed a rematch clause to fight Marcos Maidana at 147lbs again for the belt. Since this happened, this gave the WBC the right to strip Adrien Broner because his intentions is not to come back down to 135lbs and defend the belt. Adrien was not going to go back to 135lbs anyways. If anything he would make his new home at 140lbs. Daniel Estrada is the number one ranked and Nihito Arakawa is the number two ranked fighters at 135lbs. Estrada beat Arakawa already in a Technical Decision when a cut over Estrada's eye was caused by an accidental elbow and the fight was not allowed to continue. Estrada was up on the scorecards anyway.
