Arum: "Rios don't need to clean out a division..he's not a janitor"

By Kevin Davis

Bob Arum the President of Top Rank Promotions told BoxingSocialist that he doesn't believe that cleaning out a division is important as it once was back in the day. Once i brought up the fact that maybe Brandon Rios would want to clean out the division at 140lbs, Arum imfaticaly gave his opinion on that subject. "What the f*** does that mean?, clean out a division.. he's not a janitor, you fight the match that's going to bring you the biggest payday." When i asked about a fight with the reigning champion of the division Danny Garcia, again he was appalled by the question. "Hell no! Why, he doesn't need that fight, I believe the boxing fans would rather see Rios fight Timothy Bradley."

Back in the days cleaning out a division was a goal of the top fighters, to collect all the belts so the world would know they were the one and only champion. Nowadays, no one cares, from the fighters, to the promoters, to the commissioning bodies. The WBC doesn't want to do unification bouts anymore. They are more into selling the event rather than the principle of knowing who is the best. In today's time, they will tell us who is the best as we the fans will never get to know for sure because the fighters will make their money and run to another division, for another big payday.
