Kell Brook (31-0) will fight Mexican Alvaro Robles (17-2) on March 15th at the ECHO Arena in what will be a keep busy fight for the Sheffield welterweight. Robles hasn’t travelled outside of his native Mexico before, but has a fairly high stoppage ratio (78.5%).
Brook will be expected to challenge for a world title at some point this year, and is mandatory for the IBF title, currently held by Shawn Porter.
IBF chairman Lindsey Tucker to WBN recently: “We will be notifying Porter to start negotiations with Brook on April 7. However, Porter is still in an optional period and can fight anyone in the top 15 up until April 6.”
Time is running out for Porter to arrange an interim fight, but his father Kenny Porter, was dismissive regarding a fight with Brook. He said: “We’re not fighting Kell Brook. We don’t know who our next opponent is yet and we are just awaiting the announcement.”
The ‘Mersey Beat’ card is topped by Tony Bellew’s cruiserweight debut against experienced Russian Valery Brudov. There should be plenty of action at super middleweight with Callum ‘Mundo’ Smith (9-0) taking on Georgian Mikheil Avakyan (21-11-4), and his brother, British champion Paul Smith, also fighting in a ten rounder. Rocky Fielding, who could face Smith for his British title later in the year, is due to defend his Commonwealth belt against TBA after Tony Dodson withdrew with an injury last week.
Dagenham lightweight Kevin Mitchell (36-2) takes an eight rounder in preparation for a probable appearance on the Froch v Groves II undercard at Wembley on May 31st, and rising light welterweight talent Robbie Davies Jnr (4-0) takes his fifth professional fight against Oldham’s Ashley Mayall (4-3).
Tickets are priced at £30, £40, £60 & £100 through www.EchoArena.com or by calling 0844 8000 400.
