One of my favorite people in the world to talk to is former welterweight champion and trainer Buddy McGirt. No one knows the boxing game inside out more than Buddy, his insight and knowledge has led him to train many fighters to world titles who many felt, careers where finished. Arturo Gatti his most celebrated champion. Other forget Buddy also trained Vernon Forrest back to a world title and lost both of his fighters just two weeks apart in the same year.
McGirt told me while sipping on his cognac, "I had just came back from Arturo funeral and I get a call from Atlanta at 5:30 in the morning and to hear that news, man that just made my heart sink because, here is a guy that went there to give back to the community and look what happened. and my right hand to God I'm not lying. When Arturo died we were at my house playing cards and he bought me my cognac that I like, He said 'You know these deaths come in three's.' That just messed my head up right there. I was about to quit the game after that because it took a lot out of me man."
Buddy also spoke on the new era of boxing these sport enhancing medicines, and science experts, working with fighters. "Listen man, you got fighters out there who bust there ass, and get results, win world titles and don't use that s***. Boxing have survived all types of scandals in the past, it's part of the game, but we never ever, ever had this problem until these, strength and conditioning guys came in, and if you ask me they need to ban all these strength and conditioning guys from working with boxers. They just f***** up the game of boxing."
