I attended and cover the Chavez-Vera fight and undercard fights. There were two undercard bouts that I covered, pay attention to are which are Karim Mayfield-Chris Fernandez, and Jose Ramirez-Daniel Calzada. While the main event of course was Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.-Bryan Vera.
The first undercard bout that I witness and pay attention to was the Karim Mayfield-Chris Fernandez fight The bout is a ten rounder. Mayfield who is (17-0,1, 10KOs) is making his Top Rank debut. In round 1, Mayfield landed body shots, straight left shots and 1-2 combinations. This was a feel round for both fighters. In round 2, Fernandez started the round by landing two left hook shots that hurt Mayfield. Both fighters traded shots in the round. Round 3, both Mayfield and Fernandez were holding and trading shots with one another, but Mayfield landed the left hook followed by and uppercut. The main punch for round 3 was Mayfield landing a straight right that stuns Fernandez. Towards the end of round 3, both fighters traded shots. In round 4, Mayfield landed the hook shots to the chin on Fernandez that drops Fernandez. Fernandez was down, got up and was able to continue the fight. Then Mayfield, did a 1-2 combination into the chin followed by a left hook that drops Fernandez. The ref started counting but Fernandez got up and that was the round. In round 4, Mayfield dropped Fernandez twice. In round 5, Mayfield landed an uppercut, hook shot followed by a body shot on the ropes. Both fighters in round 5 traded shots with one another until the end of the round. In round 6, both fighters removed around traded hooks but they both missed the exchanged shots. Then they both traded shots once again and that was the end of round 6. In round 7 Mayfield landed a straight left followed two more straight lefts. Then Mayfield landed a straight left followed by a right hook. Fernandez landed two left hook that rocked Mayfield. Mayfield would then, land a right hook followed by a straight left. That was the end of round 7. Finally in round 8, Mayfield a left and right hooks. Then he (Mayfield) would land a straight left, and a 1-2 combination. Finally Mayfield landed a left hook to the body that made Fernandez take a knee. The ref did a count of 10 but Fernandez was unable to get up. Your winner for that fight by a knockout and still undefeated Karim Mayfield.
Next stop on the undercard of Chavez-Vera is Jose Ramirez-Daniel Calzada. That fight was a four rounder. In round 1 of Ramirez-Calzada Ramirez did head movements from left to right followed by a 1-2 straight shots. Then Ramirez landed a left hook body shot. Round 1 was a feel out round for Ramirez. In round 2, both fighters did 1-2 shots at one another (traded shots), then Ramirez landed 1-2 straight shots at Calzada. Then Ramirez landed a straight right hand then both fighters traded shots while Calzada was on the ropes. That was round 2. In round 3, Ramirez landed a left straight followed by a straight right. Then Ramirez did a 1-2 shot to the body. Both fighters traded shots. Ramirez would then land left hooks to the chin followed by a left hook to the body. Jose next landed a left uppercut. Both fighters towards the end of round 4 traded shots but nothing lands. Finally in round 4, both fighters went aggressively by trading shots. Ramirez had his opponent on the ropes to work the body by landing body shots. Calzada then landed a left hook to the left chin of Ramirez, and then finally Ramirez landed his 1-2 straights. That was then end of the 4th and final round. Your winner by UD Jose Ramirez.
Finally it is time for the main event that everyone including the media and me were looking forward to which is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.-Bryan Vera. Julio is coming off a 9 month layoff after testing positive on a post fight drug test after his fight against Sergio Martinez. This bout is a ten rounder.
In round 1, Vera landed a straight left. Then Vera would land again a straight left followed by a right uppercut. Chavez would then land a left uppercut that rocks Vera then Chavez would land the same left uppercut but it did not really rock Vera. Vera would then land two straight left hands then Chavez landed a left hook to the chin of Vera. That was round 1. Round 1 to me was a feel out round for both fighters. In round 2, both fighters traded shots but Vera landed a left hook to the chin by Vera. Chavez would then land a left uppercut then Vera would land a left hook followed by an uppercut. Combinations by Chavez to end round 2. In round 3, Vera landed straight left hands to start the round. Both fighters were aggressive by exchanging shots at one another. Then Chavez landed a right hook on the right chin of Vera that stuns Vera. That was round 3. On round 4, both fighters exchanged shots but Chavez landed a left hook on Vera followed by a straight left and a left hook that rocked Vera. Vera landed a body shot but it did not hurt Chavez because he (Chavez) was blocking them. Chavez landed a straight right but towards the end of round 4, both fighters traded shots. Round 5 was next and on that round Chavez landed a right straight hand followed by a left hook to the body and 1-2 combinations by both fighters (Chavez and Vera). Chavez would then land a straight right hand that rocked Vera. During round 5, Vera landed some low shots that Chavez thought that it was a low blow, so Chavez complained to the ref but the ref decided to let the fight continue on. No points were taken away from both fighters. Fight continued on with both fighters exchanging shots to end the 5th round. In round 6, Vera landed a left hook to the body. Then both fighters traded shots and Chavez landed his 1-2 followed by a hook shot. Then Chavez landed two left hook body shots. Both fighters traded shots but Vera threw the final shots to end round 6. In round 7, Chavez landed a 1-2 followed by a body shot. Vera did a 1-2 combination followed by a straight right hanf. Chavez landed a left hook that rocks Vera followed by a 1-2 combination to end the round. Round 8 was next, both fighters exchanged shots and Vera lands a 1-2 combination on Chavez. Toward the end of the round, both fighters exchanged shots. When round 9 was next, Vera landed a 1-2 combination followed by an uppercut that rocks Chavez. Then Vera landed a 1-2 to the body and head of Chavez. Chavez landed his 1-2 combination that rocks Vera and both fighters once again until the end of round 9 traded shots. Finally in round 10, Chavez was running round the ring like Sergio Martinez does, then he landed a left hook. Chavez would then land a right hook that rocks Vera. Vera worked, the body and Chavez would then exchange shots with Vera. When round 10 was about to end both fighters traded shots, and that was the last round. After the fight we went to the score cards from the three judges. The three judges scored the bout 96-94, 97-93, and 98-92. Your winner by UD Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Most fans were booing because they all thought that Vera won the fight but Chavez won. Some Chavez fans were happy that he won (Chavez).
Overall fight night of boxing. I was impressed with Karim Mayfield's victory on his Top Rank debut. I see him getting a title shot really soon. I would not mind if he fought the winner of Alvarado-Provodnikov for the WBO title. Jose Ramirez is getting better as a fighter and I look forward to watching him progress. For Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., I see him fighting at super middleweight with fighters such as Andre Ward, Lucian Bute, Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, Andre Dirrell, Arthur Abraham and others in that division. Chavez Jr, to me will no longer be fighting at 160.
