It was the fight that was going to show if Joe Calzaghe was the worldwide real deal in facing tough American Boxer Jeff Lacy. Having come into the match undefeated in 22 bouts and bringing good strong power having 17 KO's (much like Sergey Kovalev) but the one thing that brought Lacy undone that night was that he was stepping in with a guy who had a high output and was going to bully due to the intensity of the pace of the fight and also a huge factor in his demise was the fans of the UK (M.E.N Arena) including a high portion of die hard Welsh fans who really like to get behind their Boxers creating an atmosphere that can be one of a confidence killer. That night Joe Calzaghe took to an undefeated feared (much like Kovalev) Boxer in Jeff Lacy for 12 rds and battering him to remain undefeated himself at 41-0 (31KO) with a very clear UD12.
Introducing Nathan Cleverly 26-0(12KO) (@NathanClev) the Welsh born Cleverly is much to the mold of the one before in Joe Calzaghe (Calzaghe is a Welsh Boxing legend) where he likes to out punch his opponent and has a high intensity level. The one outstanding ability of Cleverly is that he is able to adapt to the opponents weakness and control the fight at the pace he wants. Coming into this fight Cleverly is in a much similar situation to Joe Calzaghe being that he is putting his undefeated record on the line to the much feared opponent in Sergey Kovalev 22-0-1(19KO) like Lacy was back in the day to Calzaghe. The one thing that is quite clear here is a big punching Russian is on his way to a roaring crowd of fanatical Welsh fans who will be backing their Boxer in Cleverly to be putting on the same master class performance that the great Joe Calzaghe put on Undefeated American Jeff Lacy that night at M.E.N Arena, Manchester on the 4th March 2006 (7 years ago). Having the even better advantage than Joe Calzaghe (being that Nathan Cleverly has got his fight scheduled to the Motorpoint Arena, Wales, UK 12 Rds) Nathan Cleverly has the home crowd to cheer him on and send that same intimidating atmosphere that Joe Calzaghe gathered that night in defeating a powerful Jeff Lacy. The fact that both men are Welsh, both men are/were undefeated up until there big power challenge, the fact that both men have/had great chins, the fact that both men have a high volume pressure type fighting style, the fact that both men at these stages in their career/s were the WBO World Champion in their respective weight divisions Calzaghe (Super Middleweight) Cleverly (Light Middleweight, the fact that both men have/had defended their WBO World title (Calzaghe 17 times & Cleverly 5 times) is just some funny similarities to the whole Calzaghe & Cleverly paths. Though you might be thinking Cleverly has only defended 5 times and how can you compare him to Calzaghe well you look at the age of Calzaghe when he had his fight with Lacy at age 32 whereas Cleverly is still young at 26 and has 6 years before he is on that 40-0 track. Whether or not Cleverly can have that special night that Joe Calzaghe had that night is yet to be seen but the writing is on the wall and we could see history repeat itself when the very dangerous Sergey Kovalev steps into the lions den of Wales and the high output/pressure of Nathan Cleverly.
