Karceno Back in the days it was me, you, and David Estrada working out and talking about boxing, all the times I was out North to visit. Now we're old, but looking back what did it feel like making the 96 USA Olympic team?
Diaz "It was a dream come true for me because I never wanted something so badly before like that and to get it was amazing, because this kind of thing comes around every four years, so you have to make it count for something. When they raised my hand all I could do is breakdown and cry because of all the sacrifice it took to get me there."
Karceno How was Floyd Mayweather on the USA team, did you guys hang out a lot.
Diaz "Floyd was himself just loud and bragging all the time but I've known Floyd since he was 12 years old. At 12 years old he was making guys look really bad and he was very fluid, great footwork in the ring, always was in position to punch."
Karceno How did you feel turning pro and to see how you're Olympic teammates Floyd, Fernando, and Tarver, getting all the big breaks while you're kind of being overlooked?
Diaz "Well I was happy for them it showed what type of talent we had on that team, we all we're champions and the United States sent their best fighters to fight for the country. As for being overlooked, you have to look at it from the position of boxing, me and Nate Jones are from Chicago, and it's hard to get the kind of media coverage, like they have in California, you see Mayweather moved to the West Coast. yeah, this is more of a Baseball, Basketball town and Football town, but I can say I got my time to shine, I'm proud of what I've done being from Chicago. Winning the lightweight championship at home felt great."
Karceno Let's talk Manny Pacquiao, do you ever look back and say, maybe something wasn't right that night with him, with all the rumors of PED's, that came after?
Diaz "Naw, I don't look back at it and I'm not bitter, I really wanted to win badly but to tell you the truth, it wasn't Manny Pacquiao's power, I can take power, I have a pretty good chin. It was just his speed. I couldn't see the punches at all anymore, he kept turning then I was cut so I'm really not able to see the punches coming."
Karceno C'mon David, you mean to tell me that once everything stated coming out about the rumors you didn't think once about you're fight?!
Diaz "(Laughing hard) Naw man, he beat me fair and square, I take nothing away from him. If he did take something or not, I don't think so, I just think it was his speed, and I had a really hard time trying to get him to stay still, you know."
Karceno Mayweather vs Pacquiao, how do you see that fight turning out, being that you have known Mayweather for so long and you went against Manny?
Diaz "I think Floyd has the style to win because he can adjust to anyone style it just takes time, but I can see Manny's speed giving him problems early, but once Floyd gets the timing right, he will control the fight. Floyd may be stronger than Manny also, his frame is bigger. Should still be a great fight. I have to go now take care."
Karceno Thanks David,
