Exclusive: Virgil Hunter explains his Radio Rahim interview and talks El Perro

By Kevin Davis

Karceno: The boxing world is talking about your interview with Radio Rahim, what did he say that really didn't sit well with you?

Hunter: "I wouldn't say it didn't sit well, I'm not bothered by him, but if you listened to the questions he asked, he was trying to minimize Mayweather's victory over Canelo, in my opinion. I deal in reality not other peoples perceptions. He kept trying to use other people perceptions as fact, and wanted me to respond. I answered the question honestly, but he didn't like the answer, I suppose, that's why he asked the same question again. I'm going to continue to give you an honest answer each time, because i don't focus on perceptions. If we did that, do you think Amir Khan would be in the position he is right now, if we listened to perceptions, do you think El Perro would be in the position he is right now if we listened to perceptions, or Andre."

Karceno: Are you a little worried about El Perro condition wise vs Canelo after the layoff?

Hunter: "Well it's been a year and a half, since he's been in the detention center, deprived of training and conditioning. What I found out is that he's very progressive and his muscle memory tells me, he has a tremendous upside to him. I expect this to be an amazing training camp, this is a fight he has been waiting for, two years now, and it's here, so I'm looking forward to him showing me things in this camp that I've haven't seen yet."

Karceno: Any new tricks or tips, we should expect to see from El Perro against Canelo?

Hunter: "He's a warrior and when you have a good soldier, you don't want to compromise who is truly is, you just want him to be aware of a few things, that may cost him the fight on the other end, like defensively. so he just really needs to be himself, you don't want to suppress that killer instinct."

Karceno: What's the difference you see in Canelo's power and El Perro's power?

Hunter: "Well I haven't padded Canelo but from the look at the kids fight I would say he has some good power, but I catch El Perro and he has a different punch all together, it gets right to the bone and wears you down as the fight goes on, so if he connects in the right spot it will end your night."
