Cologne, October 3, 2013. It is a day to make history: Felix Sturm (34) will attempt to win an unprecedented fourth middleweight crown on December 7, 2013 when he takes on current IBF World Middleweight Champion Darren Barker in Stuttgart, Germany. If successful, Sturm would be the first German boxer ever to win four separate world titles. SAT1 in Germany and Sky Sports in the UK will broadcast the championship affair live.
After a long period of negotiations, Sturm Box-Promotion in association with Matchroom Boxing agreed to stage Barker vs. Sturm in Stuttgart. “I’m excited that we were able to get the fight to Germany”, Felix Sturm said. “I can’t wait to win my fourth world title in Stuttgart.”
But the defending champion is also confident of the task ahead. Barker told his fans on Twitter: “Let’s bring the UK to Stuttgart! I will not be beaten!” Eddie Hearn, Barker’s promoted, added: “We are all confident that Darren will defend his title in style on December 7 in Germany.”
Sturm became the IBF’s mandatory challenger with a dominating TKO win over previously unbeaten Predrag Radosevic in Dortmund last July. After flooring Radosevic three times, the referee had seen enough and stopped the fight in round four. The opponent for his title shot emerged a few weeks later, when Darren Barker dethroned the defending champion Daniel Geale in a excellent battle in Atlantic City, NJ, USA.
Ticket information about Barker vs. Sturm on December 7, 2013 at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, Germany, will be released shortly.
