Undefeated WBO jr lightweight world champion Mikey Garcia (33-0, 28 KOs) and and current #1 contender Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1-2, 20 KOs) hosted their final news conference Thursday at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York City. Here’s what they had to say:
Mikey Garcia: I expect a very good fight from Burgos. He knows what’s at stake. He’s very hungry. He’s very motivated. He believes that the title I hold should belong to him for what happened a year ago…expect a great fight Saturday night.
Juan Carlos Burgos: Physically and mentally I am prepared. I’m here to win and it will be a great thing on my record that I have beaten Mikey Garcia…I have prepared very hard and I didn’t come here just to fight, I came here to win.
Promoter Bob Arum: Mikey Garcia is not a trash talker. He’s a cop. Anyone trash talks to him he’s going to arrest them. And besides, the people are ready for a great athlete, a great performer who is a gentleman and saves his animosity and violence for the ring and doesn’t act like a thug outside the ring. And doesn’t flaunt and wave dollar bills or flush them down a toilet, but is somebody who is a true American who really is grateful for where he is…we at Top Rank believe that Mikey Garcia is a coming superstar.
Joining Garcia and Burgos at the news conference were undefeated heavyweight contenders Bryant Jennings and Artur Szpilka, who will rumble in the 10-round co-main event.
Artur Szpilka: I’m ready for this fight. I’m going to knock him out, because I worked hard. I can’t wait. This will be a good war.
Bryant Jennings: You’re definitely going to see a complete fighter. I don’t really talk a lot of smack, but I’m gonna do what I gotta do and I’m going to put that work in. I don’t look for no knockouts, as I said before, that’s kind of childish to me…here I am, the next heavyweight champion of the world Bryant Jennings.
