Weight, Weight, Weight for it .... Weight. That is why it will never happen now. When Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was in talks to one day fight Saul Canelo Alvarez it brought mouth watering jaw dropping fans to see the two legends from Mexico go at it. Recently Alvarez took a loss to Floyd Mayweather and Chavez is coming off a loss to Sergio Martinez. That's ok because the fans still wanted to see it. Let's Move Goldenboy vs Toprank out of the picture for a second.
The problem is Chavez Jr was never a true middleweight. Reports say he walked around 185-190 lbs sometimes. He would weight drain himself all the way down to 160lbs, then blow back up to 175-180lbs the day of the fight. It's easy beating people up when you put on 20lbs overnight. Right now Chavez was suppose to originally fight Bryan Vera at 165lbs, then it got pushed to 168lbs. Then all of a sudden a cut prevented the fight. Now he needed more time and most fans thought it was a ploy because he was struggling to make weight.
Guess what? The fans were right. Now the week of the fight, Chavez Jr said he "would try" to make the 168lb limit. He is stuck at 173lbs. Canelo would be able to move to 160lbs now and still be comfortable but no way in the world Chavez can make 160lbs any more. So therefore the fight everyone wanted to see is just a mere dream and fantasy matchup. Hey, we can still see Canelo vs Sergio Martinez though.
