Khan trying to work a deal to fight Broner on Mayweather’s undercard

Having been turned down by Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a fight on May 3rd, Amir Khan is now trying to work a deal to fight former three division world champion Adrien Broner on Mayweather’s undercard in exchange for Mayweather agreeing to fight him. So in other words, Khan will do Mayweather a big favor by helping make his May 3rd Showtime pay-per-view card a successful one by agreeing to fight Broner in exchange for Mayweather signing him up for his next fight after that.

This is something out of the fairy tail story Rumpelstiltskin, because it’s highly unlikely Mayweather is going to agree to fight Khan if he faces Broner.

Having Broner-Khan on his May 3rd undercard would likely give it a considerable serge in terms of PPV buys, but I don’t think Mayweather is that desperate to where he needs to make deals with Khan in order to boost the PPV buys. Golden Boy Promotions can always find some other talent to attract interest in that card besides a between Khan and Broner.

Broner’s stock has really gone downhill since his fight against Marcos Maidana last December. Khan obviously sees Broner as vulnerable fighter because it’s highly unlikely that Khan would ever agree to fight him if he believed he was a dangerous opponent like Keith Thurman, for example. Broner would do well if he would agree to fight Khan, because it’s a risky fight that could pay off in a huge way if he were to stop Khan and add his scalp to his collection. However, there’s a perhaps a better chance that Broner loses to Khan badly and winds up with his career in the scrap heap.

Broner would have little choice but to move back down in weight if he were to lose to Khan, because this would be his third consecutive fight sat welterweight where Broner struggled. In his first fight at 147 last June, Broner had to labor hard to beat Paulie Malignaggi by a 12 round split decision. Broner should have gotten a clue from that fight that he wasn’t cut out for the welterweight division, but he still chose to continue to fight on at this weight. The loss to Maidana was the end result of Broner failing to understand that he’s not physically talented enough to be fighting in the welterweight division.
