Manny Pacquiao extends Top Rank contract for 2 years

I’m sure that everyone has heard by now that Manny Pacquiao has extended his contract with Top Rank . Here is the press release from earlier today.

Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank, has announced that Top Rank has signed an agreement with Manny Pacquiao and MP Promotions extending their promotional agreement through December 31, 2016.

“We are pleased that together with our partners at HBO we will continue presenting to the public fights of the great Manny Pacquiao through the end of 2016,” Arum said. “The partnership among Manny, Top Rank, MP Promotions and HBO has been a wonderful one for all parties and for the public and it’s great that is will continue for the years to come.”

So I guess it’s official that a Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight will never happen. Although it was supposed to have happened a few years ago, it’s a fight that a lot of people still wanted to see. This fight would have generated so much money that it probably would’ve broke records. Mayweather has said that he won’t fight Pacquiao while he is under contract with Arum. Pacquiao’s extended contract isn’t up until December of 2016 while Mayweather has 3 more fights left under his contract with Showtime. His next date is set for September 13, 2014 and he plans to fight again in May and September of 2015, with September being his last fight. So the fight that already seemed as if it wasn’t going to happen, now really seems impossible. There are so many other fights for Pacquiao outside of Mayweather that now seems almost impossible as well if the “Cold War” continues. Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, Marcos Maidana, Adrien Broner, Amir Khan… just to name a few. What options does Pacquiao have with Top Rank? A fifth fight with Marquez? A third fight with Bradley? A rematch with Rios? Provodnikov or Alvarado? That’s pretty much the Top Rank stable in the 147 pound division. I don’t know if that was a smart business move for Pacquiao. He should have at least weighed out his options. Top Rank and the rematches are getting a little old now.
