Q & A with Edwin Diaz, president of Troya Boxing Management, who talked about his highly regarded boxer, 'Speedy' Rashidi Ellis

Welterweight prospect,'Speedy' Rashidi Ellis ( 9-0, 7 KO's ) from Lynn, Massachusetts was formed under the guidance of Puerto Rican trainer, Alex Rivera at the Somerville Boxing Club. Ellis managed to win several amateur titles, and at one point of his career, he was ranked number one in the United States at the 152 weight division.

At the professional level, Rashidi's first five bouts were held in the United States but then, he decide to look for a Manager ( Edwin Diaz/Troya Boxing ) that can guide the 21 year old fighter, into a different level of competition.

Now Rashidi fights in Puerto Rico, against Puerto Rican fighters. Last week, he demolished Regino Canales ( 6-6, 2 KO's ) by way of knockout in the third round in a bout held in Humacao,PR. Later, Canales announced his retirement from boxing.

What induced you to sign Rashidi Ellis ?
ED - I discovered that he is a diamond that needs good development. He already got the tools to shine in the boxing world but we can do more with him. Also his trainer, Alex Rivera is very talented.

Why Rashidi Ellis is fighting too often in Puerto Rico?
ED - There are lots of boxers in Puerto Rico available to fight Rashidi. If Rashidi is successful in the Island, then, the next step is to go back to the United States, and take more challenges. It's very important to be recognized in both markets ( PR an US )

Explain, how can a American fighter be in the hands of two Puerto Ricans ?, Manager and Trainer.
ED - Rashidi have been training with Alex Rivera for over 10 years in Massachussets, and Alex, who is a friend of mine, recommended me to join the team.

How you describe Rashidi Ellis ?
ED - He has great speed, great ring IQ. He has great punching power too. As a person, he is very humble. He's always helping the young ones at the gym.

Ellis is set to return to the ring on Saturday, August, 16 at the Sola Bezares Coliseum in Caguas, Puerto Rico in a event promoted by Cotto Promotions and Top Rank.

The boxer from Lynn Massachusetts ended up with a record of 60-11 in amateurn boxing, which included:

-2012 National PAL (Police Athletic League) Champion

-Three time New England Golden Gloves Champion

-Rocky Marciano Amateur Boxing Tournament Champion

-Silver Medal at the Independent Cup in the Dominican Republic
