Andre Ward, one of the top fighters in this sport today, can't seem to catch a break. Well let's see if that's true, for many that paid attention it started during the Super Six Tournament. Andre Ward was suppose to face off against another undefeated fighter in Andre Dirrell, the boxing media was in love with that match up, but what many didn't know is that Ward and Dirrell, didn't want to fight each other.
They tried to ask for more money from Showtime, in the middle of the tournament even threaten to pull out, Ward stated that if they had to fight they would do it but he wouldn't like it. The Dirrell brothers and Ward grew close during their amateur days, but hello, you're in a tournament. Dirrell gets a doctor to play ball and he was out of the tournament. After the Super Six was over, Ward was the WBC champion haven being awarded the title because Mikkel Kessler was stripped due to injury and refusal to fight.
So the winner of the Super Six was to become the new WBC champion, the number one contender for that title was no one other than Andre Dirrell. Ward didn't want to fight Dirrell for the second time. Lucian Bute was set to fight the winner of the tournament, Ward felt bute needed to fight other people in the Super Six first before facing him. Even moving to HBO to make the fight even harder to make possible. the WBC gave him a break and let him have his first fight under HBO banner was against Chad Dawson the WBC light heavyweight champion at that time.
Dawson agreed to come down to 168 to Wards division to fight for the title, Team Ward always said hey he called me out, saying he would meet us at 168, but Dawson team said when they negotiated the fight they asked that the fight be at a catch-weight of 170lbs to make it fair for both fighters, and was told no it had to be at 168, or there was no fight. We all know what happened next.
Andre Ward after the fight declared he wanted to challenge retired undefeated champion Joe Calzaghe from Wales, to comeback to the ring after being retired for over five years and is now in his 40's. Then Ward has a shoulder surgery to repair a tear in his arm once the WBC was making him fight a mandatory or else, he mysteriously goes under the knife.
Now he comes back after being gone a year, stripped by the WBC and feeling slighted, Ward starts a campaign to call out Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. the former WBC middleweight champion who was taking a beating at the hands of Sergio Martinez before one knockdown in the last round may have saved his career. Chavez had training issues, going into the fight and had failed another drug test. The questions about his focus and heart has always been an issue with him, but Ward believes this is good business to make a fight with him.
I guess we should just keep giving Ward all the breaks he want until, we turn around years from now saying why did we agree to see him fight mediocre talent, after the super six. Meanwhile, Sergey Kovalev, Adonis Stevenson, Lucian Bute, Carl Froch, Edwin Rodriguez, are all great opponents for Ward, but lets see what the so called S.O.G gives us in the end.
