Stevenson eyes interim title; unified title under threat for Froch & Kessler

Mandatory IBF title challenger Adonis Stevenson 19-1 (16KOs) has been left annoyed that Carl Froch has been given permission to defend the IBF Super Middleweight title in a unification clash against WBA "Regular" champion Mikkel Kessler.

Promoter Yvon Michel has also commented that there is a flaw in the IBF rules relating to mandatory defences. Michel stated, "There was a flaw in their regulations.  No rule proposed a time limit in the case of a unification of titles. For this reason, there has been a request for interim authorisation for a championship and we should have an answer by the end of the week. "

With Froch opting to take the Kessler rematch Stevenson is expected to fight in April for the interim IBF title.

Michel also commented on the Froch-Kessler contract in that he expects the IBF force the winner to fight Stevenson, "if the contracts arrive before January 29 (13 days time) and if the contract contains no provision preventing the winner to face Adonis."

"The winner must also confirm in writing that they will face Adonis within 90 days after the contest (by April 27)", he continued. "If one of these conditions are not satisfied, the title should became vacant."

GYM Promotion are applying pressure on the IBF not to approve the Froch-Kessler fight for their title so it will be interesting to see whether the IBF will again look at their rule book, last amended in 2008, and judge whether the IBF title will become vacant because a mandatory defence has not been meet.

Froch could decide to the drop the IBF title.  As boxing fans know the alpha belts don't mean much but do bring the bargaining power and Froch has maximised that power by getting Kessler back in the ring, the fight that he has craved.

The nonsense created by the WBA sees Kessler carry the "Regular" title which is essentially a belt that the WBA might decide to unify again with the Super Champion [Andre Ward].  That title could be Froch's ticket to a Ward rematch once the 168lbs Boss returns from shoulder surgery.

*NOTE - have stated that the WBA "Super" title will be on the line on May 25th.  It is unclear what the current WBA position is but it is possible, with Ward in rehab after surgery, that they "elevate" the American to "Champion in Recess"*
