The Day Roger Mayweather Got Dropped and Sat Down in the Wrong Corner

By Shawn Craddick

Roger "Black Mamba" Mayweather who boasted a record of 59-13, with 35 KO's met against a Hall of Famer in Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker in 1987. At the time Pernell was just 11-0 and Roger was 26-4. Out of Rogers 5 losses, 4 of them were by way of KO. In the very first round all the announcers would talk about was Roger's power in the right hand, but also his shaky chin. Fighters like that make for an exciting fight because they can hurt you with one punch yet if you hit them good, it's over.

We all know how that fight ended. Pernell won a 12 Round unanimous decision, but before that win Roger got dropped at the end of the first round and it seemed like he was not going to make it. The bell rung and the next thing you know Roger unaware of where he was at, went in sat down in Pernell's stool. His trainer Jesse Reid had to come get him. Lou Duva in the other corner just looked at Roger like what are you doing over here? Then in the 9th round, Roger's trunks were starting to fall and Pernell helped bring them down more and embarrassing Roger. Roger got his trunks pulled up and then went to work because he was upset. He hurt Pernell with is right hand and dropped him. Roger was not able to finish though. Pernell won the NABF Lightweight Title. It's a must see fight.
