Top Rank Turns down Donaire/Mares for now

By Kevin Davis

In a highly anticipated match-up between 'Fighter of the Year' Filipino superstar Nonito Donaire and the undefeated Mexican superstar Abner Mares, looked like it had a chance of being made when Golden Boy Promotion offered an unbelievable sum for the fight. Three million dollars, and when they sent out the contracts pulses were shaking because this had a real chance of making it.

I was told by the team representing Golden Boy Promotions that Top Rank indeed had the contracts and decided not to take the fight at this time because Donaire has a commitment to HBO for April the 13th, something I confirmed with the Top Rank president himself.

When told by me that Richard Schaefer was willing to do the fight on HBO if Nonito had no choice and could make the date of April the 13th, this was all news to Arum. "When did he say that?.. I wont negotiate through the press if they have an offer, tell them to send it to me and we will go from there."

Arum is leaning towards a Rigondeaux fight which is another match-up fans would love, but mares appears to be the greater threat and bigger risk.

ill believe donaire is fighting rigo when i see them across the ring from each other.... arum will not do biz with gbp... period... why are you helping spread arums agenda ceno?... lmao... you, the guru of the website should know this... i know you want to keep your pipeline to him open but come on himes... and a 5 round fight?... yeah it'll last 5 with donaire sprawled out on the canvas... rigo is all wrong for donaire and he wont be a setting duck for that left hook... anyway... you should have taken off that "for now" part of the title to this blog.. lmao... but hey... IF arum feels compelled to make this fight we can make a friendly on site wager... lets say the loser has to write a blog on the winner saying how great they are... meaning you write a blog on me after rigo beats donaire saying how great a boxing mind i am or vice versa... lmao...

contracts have been received for Donaire vs Rigondeaux and things could signed and sealed later this week.  Fight could take place in LA or New York.

Mares is tailor made for Donaire imo.

The way Mares steams in with the head to force his opponents to the ropes will see Donaire winging in the left hook and rock Mares' world.
