World Triple Header – Salido v Garcia, Golovkin v Rosado & Martinez v Burgos

By Samaarah Choubak

It may get very ugly when Orlando Salido and Mikey Garcia clash over the weekend, could it be that Salido will have to give up his WBO Featherweight Title or will this river wash this up clear with his reflection defending it?

Salido (39-11-2,27 KOs) from Sonoro, Mexico first took his world title of the IBF featherweight title in 2010 and avenged his previous loss with a split decision win after three attempts he was finally on the forefront.  He did suffer many losses in the beginning of his professional career, things also went downhill when he faced a disciplinary over an anabolic steroid and he received a suspension.

Garcia (30-0-0, 27 Kos) being precise and patient during his fights is what he is known for and comes from a family of boxers.  Top Rank turned him into a professional boxer in 2006 and his record is undefeated.  He said in an interview with Sweet Science, “Orlando Salido is the best featherweight champion in the world, and he has earned the right to be called that," said Garcia via press release. "He is very strong and very experienced, and this will be the toughest test of my career, but I am ready for it.”

The world triple header will also include Gennady Golovkin vs. Gabriel Rosado for the WBA Middleweight Title and Rocky Martinez vs. Juan Carlos Burgos for the WBO Super Featherweight Title.

Gennady Golovkin the winner of the 2004 Olympics in Athens saw Gennady Golovkin win a silver at middleweight and won fights over Lucian Bute and Andy Lee in the World Amateur Championships in 2003, and also Andy Dirrell,he has progressed to having a total of 23 fights of which 20 of them been won by way of knock outs.

The Khazakstanian turned professional in Germany and won his first 19 fights by knockout, on August 14th 2010, he won the vacant Interim Middleweight Title, defeating Milton Nunez by 1st round KO in Panama City.

Golovkin’s style of boxing is straightforward which makes him a danger to his opponents, it has been reported that he is not able to keep his sparring partners.  After putting on his best performance in his American debut on HBO by savagely beating Grzegorz Proska, it resulted in a fifth round stoppage .

On this occasion he will be sternly defending his middleweight titles against an exciting fighter Gabriel Rosado who began his career going the distance against Fernando Guerrero and followed this with a larger win by stopping eschew Powell in the ninth round to win the WBO Intercontinental Light Middleweight title.

“Rocky” Martinez who is the two-time WBO junior lightweight champion will face No.1 contender Juan Carlos Burgos, Martinez confidently shadow boxed during the media day yesterday, both of these boxers have unique styles and it will make a classy fight.  Martinez will defend his WBO Junior lightweight title belt.

HBO will set this off with their first 2013 “Boxing After Dark” with Salido vs. Garcia and with this fight being the main event live from Madison Square Garden. It is in conjunction with K2 Promotions and Top Rank being the official promoters for this event. The night will also include Seanie Monaghan vs. Roger Cantrell, heavyweights Felix Verdejo vs. Tomi Archambault and Glen Tapia vs. Ayi Bruce.
